Supartz FX Therapy

Supartz FX is another hyaluronate utilized in viscosupplementation. Extracted from chicken combs, this polysaccharide contains repeated disaccharide units of flucuronic acid and N-
acetylglucosamine. The substance is sterile, viscoelastic, and nonpyrogenic having a relatively neutral pH of 6.8-7.8 and a high molecular weight of 620,000-1,170,000 daltons. One mL of Supartz FX contains 10 mg of sodium hyaluronate dissolved in physiological saline in a 1.0% solution.

Supartz is used in viscosupplementation via direct injection into the knee joint. Like other hyaluronates of its kind, it is extracted from chicken combs and enhances the cushioning and lubricating properties of the joint’s synovial fluid.

Supartz FX is indicated for those who have failed to have beneficial response from conservative non-pharmacologic therapy and simple analgesics. The dosage for each injection is 2.5 mL. Three to five injections are performed typically separated by week.

More About Supartz Therapy

Both Orthovisc and Supartz FX are fabricated via substances derived from the fleshy growths on the heads of roosters and chickens, known as “combs”. This presents contraindications for those who are allergic to egg products, feathers, or avian proteins. Following the procedure, pain and swelling is possible, but only in short duration. Injections, while still a surgical procedure, are low-risk and patients are often eager to receive them. However, it is not a cure, though, a response can last from nine to twelve months.
